Oceanside Band Takes 2nd Place at First Show

The OHS Band & Color Guard meet to talk about their performance.

The 2011 Oceanside High School Marching Band & Pageantry competed in their first field tournament of the season yesterday, September 15, 2011. Taking the field at 5:00pm, the band performed their 2011 program, Adventure on the High Seas, before the audience and judges at the Rancho Buena Vista Premiere Field Tournament at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, California.

Oceanside took the second place award for the auxilliary category (color guard and pageantry) in the 2A division with a score of 64.o. The band overall earned a score of 64.6, gaining them second place as well in the 2A division. Congratulations to all of them for an excellent first show.

Kicking off our 2011 season

IMG_6418 Our 2011 Band Camp will be starting shortly, kicking off our 2011 Marching Band Season. Please make sure you've got a copy of the 2011 Summer Calendar. Also remember to check back here, as well as the Band's Facebook Page for any calendar or schedule updates. Don't forget to bring the items on the list below with you to band camp. You'll definitely want them!

Things to bring to Band Camp...
Your instrument
Comfortable clothes for movement
Hat, sunscreen & sunglasses
Athletic shoes for marching (no hi-tops, sandals, flip-flops, etc.)
Black gym shorts, if you have them
Dinner, or money for dinner
A positive, enthusiastic attitude with a desire to excel!

Program Update, 6/28-7/2

IMG_4674This week is home to Band Camp #1 which gets us started on our 2011 Marching Band season.

Band Camp #1 runs from 6:00pm - 8:30pm on Tuesday (6/28), Wednesday (6/29) and Thursday (6/30) at the Oceanside High School Band Room. Please remember to come dressed for marching, to include shorts, appropriate shoes (no flip flops / sandals), hats and sunscreen. If you're a new member who doesn't yet have a uniform please be at the school by 5:00pm on Tuesday 6/28 to be fitted.

Parade Intinerary Saturday, July 2, 2011
8:30am ~~ Call time at band room. Change into uniforms
9:15am ~~ Leave OHS for start of parade
10:00am ~~ Parade begins
11:30am-12:00pm ~~ Return to OHS for pizza.

We'll have a group attending the Corps at the Crest San Diego Drum Corps show being held at El Camino High School on Friday, July 1. Times for this event aren't yet available.

The Oceanside Independence Day Parade will be on Saturday, July 2. We'll meet at the school at 8:00am to travel to the parade start site, and be finished back at the high school at 12:00pm. Please remember to wear clothing for under the marching uniform (long black socks, marching shoes, black shorts, plain white or band shirt).

2010-2011 Video Yearbooks complete!

A photo of the 2010-2011 Video Yearbook stackThe DVDs of the 2010-2011 Band & Color Guard Video Yearbook are now complete and at the high school! Seniors should stop by the band room to pick up their copy sometime this week. Everybody else should get their copy during class.
This year the discs are in special sleeves which allow the back to be pealed off and stuck to someplace safe and special. (Like maybe in your yearbook?) They are clear after being stuck down just in case you don't have any unsigned space - you'll be able to read through it.

Program Update, 5/23 – 5/29

IMG_3505We're beginning to wrap up our year, but there are quite a few events to go before we're fully wrapped up.

Pageantry Auditions for the 2011-2012 School Year will be beginning on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 from 3:30pm - 6:30pm in the Band Room. Please remember to wear appropriate clothing for movement.

The Band Awards Dessert will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 7:00pm in the OHS Gym. Please bring a dessert to share as we celebrate the past year.

We'll be participating in the Valley Center Memorial Day Parade again this year on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Report time is 7:15am at the Oceanside Band Room. Busses will leave at 7:45am. The parade begins at 10:00am in Valley Center. We expect to be back to OHS by 12:30pm, where pizza will be provided. Please remember to wear clothing for under the marching uniform (white t-shirt, black shorts, black socks). It gets warm and sunny in this area, so bringing sunblock would be a wise idea.

Barnes and Noble Fundraiser this Saturday!

BARNES AND NOBLE IS HOSTING A SURPRISE FUNDRAISER for the OHS Instrumental Music Program And they've even put us on their list of events when you go to www.BarnesandNoble.com and look at stores and events! Isn't that exciting!

When: This Saturday, May 14th from open to close (9 a.m. to 11 p.m.)
Where: Barnes and Noble at the El Camino North Shopping Center, 2615 Vista Way in Oceanside

All a supporter of the OHS Instrumental Music program has to do is mention at the checkstand that you want to help the Oceanside High School Band! But that's not all--Barnes and Noble will also give a percentage to customers ordering online for 5 days afterwards--just note that the order is for the Oceanside High School Band Boosters.

Volunteers are needed to let customers know how they too can help the Oceanside High School Instrumental Program. Stephanie King has volunteered for the story hour at 11:00-11:45. You know what a "go-getter" Stephanie is--let's give her some support and give an hour at Barnes and Noble also. What hour or hours would you like to volunteer? Who knows--maybe you'll even find the book you've been dying to read!

Remember, all you have to do is mention at the checkstand that you are supporting the Oceanside High School Band or order online for 5 days afterward noting that the order is for the Oceanside High School Band Boosters.

More importantly remember that reading is a good thing--whether you do it the old-fashioned way with books or with the new-fashioned way with the Nook. So support the OHS Instrumental Program and let your family and friends know that they can too!

Program Update, 12/13 – 12/19

IMG_0297We've now completely wrapped up our 2010 Marching Band season. A huge thanks to everyone who helped out this season volunteering at Band Spectacular, chaperoning, supporting fundraisers and every thing else that needed to get done.

Winter Guard Rehearsal will be held Tuesday, December 14 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm at the high school.

A Drumline Parents' Meeting will be held Tuesday, December 14 at 7:00pm in the band room. Following the parents' meeting the monthyl Band Boosters' Meeting will be held 7:30pm in the band room. We hope to see you there.

Band Pictures will be taken at 1:30pm on Thursday, December 16. Please see the form your student will bring home for additional information.

Program Update, 11/22 – 11/28

There is no school this week for the Thanksgiving break. As such, we will not be holding a Tuesday Night Rehearsal, Thursday 7th Period, or Thursday Sectionals.

On Friday, November 26 we will be performing for the CIF Playoffs Home Game versus La Costa Canyon High School. Call time is 6:00pm in the band room. A number of people will be away due to the holiday break, however unless you've already made arrangements with Mr. Phelps your attendance is expected at this game.

Program Update, 10/11-10/17

IMG_7057.JPGThe 2010 Oceanside High School Band and Color Guard competed in their first competition of the season last weekend at Vista Murrieta High School, taking first place in their division with a score of 60.15. Our regular Tuesday Night Rehearsal will be happening on Tuesday 10/12 from 5:30pm - 8:30pm at the high school. Additionally, our September Booster Meeting will also be happening that evening at 7:00pm in the Band Room.
Thursday 10/14 we'll be holding Thursday Sectionals from 2:30pm - 4:00pm, and 7th Period Percussion & Pageantry from 2:30pm - 4:30pm.

The Homecoming Football Game is Friday night, 10/15, but the band will not be performing at this game.

Saturday 10/16 we'll be holding a Fundraiser Car Wash from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the Round Table Pizza near College Blvd and Highway 78. Presale tickets are available from any band or color guard member. Please visit the Car Wash Information Page for additional information.

Program Update, 10/4-10/10

This week is a rather important week for our program, with our first home game in our own brand new stadium and our first competition of the season.

Updated The Tuesday Night Rehearsal on 10/5 will be from 6:0pm - 8:30pm. We will be in the new stadium tonight, however this will be a "closed rehearsal", open only to staff and students due to the stadium not being fully completed. We appreciate your cooperation on this matter.

On Thursday 10/7 we'll be holding Thursday Sectionals from 2:30pm - 4:00pm, and 7th Period Percussion & Pageantry from 2:30pm - 4:30pm.

Updated Friday 10/8 will be the Home Football Game vs Mission Hills in our own stadium. Call time to the band room is 5:00pm. We will be participating in the Grand Opening ceremonies for the new stadium.

Updated On Saturday 10/9 we'll be attending our first Competition at Vista Murrieta High School. We'll be performing at 5:22pm.
